When I created this picture, for me it was all about the composition. I was caught up in how the ripples of the water moved my eyes through the image. The birds were, in a way, incidental to the design. But that all changed once a friend of mine looked at the picture and started laughing. What she saw was a bewildered drake watching his girl leave him in the dust. Hence the name, “Rocky Romance.”

This, to me, is what makes art so special: how it speaks to each of us differently as individuals.
